ICBC Coverage and Direct Billing

ICBC provides eligible customers with access to pre-approved treatments during the first 12 weeks after a crash. A physician or nurse practitioner referral is not generally required for these initial treatments.

The number of approved sessions, treatment fees and eligibility requirements vary by discipline. Treatment beyond the initial 12-week period may require additional approval.

Metrotown Active Health can direct bill ICBC for eligible treatment. If any portion of a service is not covered by ICBC’s approved rate, we will explain that amount before treatment whenever possible.

For definitive information about your claim and coverage, please contact ICBC or your recovery specialist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

Eligible patients generally do not need a physician or nurse practitioner referral to access pre-approved treatments during the first 12 weeks after a crash.

What do I need to bring?

Please bring your ICBC claim number and Personal Health Number. If available, also bring the name and contact information of your ICBC recovery specialist.

Can you direct bill ICBC?

Yes. We can direct bill ICBC for eligible treatment. Coverage limits and approved treatment fees apply, and some services may have a patient fee.

Which treatment should I book first?

That depends on your symptoms and functional limitations. Physiotherapy is often a helpful starting point for assessment and recovery planning, but RMT, active rehabilitation or acupuncture may also be appropriate.

If you are unsure, call us at 778-742-5078 and we’ll help you select an appointment.

Can I receive more than one type of treatment?

Your care may include physiotherapy, registered massage therapy, active rehabilitation and acupuncture when clinically appropriate and eligible under your claim.

How soon should I begin?

ICBC’s initial pre-approved treatment period applies during the first 12 weeks after the crash. Booking promptly gives you more time to access appropriate care during that period.

What happens if I still need treatment after 12 weeks?

Additional treatment may be available depending on your recovery and claim. Your practitioner may prepare treatment documentation or communicate with your ICBC recovery specialist when further approval is required.

Can cyclists or pedestrians access treatment?

ICBC states that cyclists and pedestrians injured in crashes involving vehicles are eligible for the same range of care and recovery benefits in most cases. Contact ICBC to confirm your individual eligibility.
